Libya’s ceasefire: the opening move of a complex chess game.

BY: Begona Arechalde On October 23, the UN body in charge of supervising the peaceful resolution of the Libya’s Civil War, UNSMIL, announced in Geneva that the warring factions have reached a ceasefire agreement. The document, that is just three pages long, summarises the next steps in the de-escalation of the conflict. The UN must monitor the correct implementation of the clauses to prevent internal disputes and third-party interests from sabotaging the progress made. Friday's agreement gives a truce to the poverty-stricken North African country, at war since the ouster of Muammar Qaddafi in a coup orchestrated by NATO and…

LIBYA’S CIVIL WAR; THE WEST’S OIL CRUSADE NO ONE WANTED

BY: Begona Arechalde PEJOURNAL - It has been a turbulent week in Libya. Following the UN-backed GNA government's announcement to recapture the city of Sirte on July 18, Egypt declared that it will deploy its troops in the neighboring country next Monday to protect its national security "from criminal armed militias and foreign terrorist elements." Turkey, the main GNA supporter in the war, warned Cairo that such a move could be considered an invasion. The United States, concerned about Russian influence in the region, has accused Moscow of breaking the arms embargo in the country. The Libyan Civil War began…

Turkey; Returning of Europe’s headache

BY: Damir Nazarov Turkey expands the borders of intervention throughout the Middle East despite the abundance of economic problems and the prospect of being drawn into a series of large-scale conflicts, under the slogan of "protecting democracy" . In almost every hot spot in the region, the Turks built military bases or sent officers to train local AK Parti loyalists. Ankara imposes and justifies its occupation of Muslim countries by protecting local " democratic forces "(North-Western Syria, Libya), fighting "terrorism "(Northern Syria and Iraq), "helping allies "(Qatar, Somalia, Yemen) and "cooperation for economic purposes" (Sudan, Djibouti)*. The question arises, where…

SCFR: Libya; Scene of Turkey-Egypt Proxy War

PEJOURNAL - With the escalation of the armed conflict in Libya, and in particular the advance of the National Unity Government forces led by Faiz al-Siraj in areas beyond the capital, the domestic military scene in Libya and its equations have become much clearer. It has also led to obtaining further knowledge about international rivals supporting the either side in the Libyan conflict. Western supporters and General Haftar’s…

Libya’s war; Erdogan says ‘agreements’ reached with Trump

PEJOURNAL - Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said "some agreements" have been reached with his US counterpart Donald Trump that could herald a "new era" in the conflict in Libya. Turkey supports the internationally recognised government of Fayez al-Sarraj, whose forces have in recent weeks driven back an assault on the capital, Tripoli, by the forces of renegade commander Khalifa Haftar. While the US officially supports Libya's UN-recognised Government of National Accord (GNA), Haftar is supported by Washington's allies - Egypt, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), France, and Saudi Arabia - as well as Russia. "After our call this evening,…

Danger of ‘miscalculation’ as global powers scramble for position in Libya

PEJOURNAL - War-ravaged Libya begins a new phase of armed conflict after forces loyal to the internationally recognised government in Tripoli besieged strongholds of warlord Khalifa Haftar in the country’s centre and south. At least 16,000 civilians were displaced in the recent weeks of fighting in which numerous military facilities, neighbourhoods and towns changed hands in western Libya, according to the United Nations. Now the battle has moved to the coastal city of Sirte, the hometown of former leader Muammar Gaddafi, and the remote airbase in Jufrah, where Russians have quartered a dozen war jets as well as mercenaries of…
